Regular CrackBerry readers are all too familiar with the name QNX these days, as it’s the company that RIM acquired that developed the operating system that’ll be hitting the BlackBerry PlayBook in the form of the BlackBerry Tablet OS.
Of course, QNX has been around for a long time and has done a lot of stuff in a lot of industries, including automotive where it’s known as the leader in infotainment systems. With the QNX name now common in daily BlackBerry talk, we found it pretty interesting to see this video pop up on youtube this week from RealVNC, which shows off their collaboration with QNX on demoing their support for Nokia’s Terminal Mode (I know it sounds complicated… check out their press release here). Check out the video – it’s cool stuff. Having your native BlackBerry experience on the big screen like that is cool. Would love to have that! Thanks to Dave for sending this in!

The deal seems to be that if developers create an app that fits all the criteria of an Adobe AIR app that can be sold in App World, then they’re eligible for a free PlayBook. This is a pretty sweet deal considering a major feature of the PlayBook is that development on the PlayBook is supposed to be easy. Jerome from BBerryGo developed a browser for the BlackBerry PlayBook and apparently it was pretty easy. It should be interesting to see what apps developers create for the PlayBook and hopefully the development process helps shed the stigma that developing for BlackBerry is a pain in the development ass.

Back in mid-September we learned that AT&T might be dishing out some Holiday goodness with a BlackBerry Torch in red and white color. We saw earlier that there were red and white housing for the Torch, but it wasn’t certain if the parts were OEM or generic. Now, AT&T has confirmed this to be true.

If you’re a hockey fan then maybe NHL Game Center is the app for you. The NHL has updated their wide array of applications and this time around Game Center got the BlackBerry treatment it deserved. As noted in the release, the application will come in three flavors.
I’m sure many NHL fans will be glad to see this arrive. Shame about Game Center Live being only available on Verizon though. I guess that’s what the Game Center free version and upgrade are for though, to make up the difference. You can grab the free version today, the upgrade will cost you $19.99 for the full season. Thanks Jeff!

All you Foursquare users will be pleased to know the latest version has been released. Version 1.9.8 is now available for download in BlackBerry App World. If you’re not seeing it, just refresh (ALT +RSTR) your App World account and it should show up for you. No change log has been issued for this release but, some noticeable differences are better views for your profile and the icons at the top are now a little larger. And before anyone can say it — yes, I was showing off the coveted BlackBerry badge for the screenshot.

It can be handy to see the clock on your BlackBerry while it’s charging, whether it’s at night or maybe during the day while you’re at work and your device sits on your desk. Until now you were pretty much stuck with the standard analog or flip style clock that comes pre-loaded with your device’s OS if you wanted to do this. Now there is a new app from Toysoft that allows you to customize the charging screen however you like.
AnimClock is basically an analog clock that comes pre-loaded with a few different skins you can choose from. Where it gets interesting is that not only can you choose which skin you want, you can also choose to show either a static background from your own images, or you can have it rotate through images in a folder on your device. You can even choose to just have a color as the background. If you choose not to show an image, animClock will also show some information along with the skinned clock you picked. This information includes your battery percentage, battery temperature, and date/time. All of this info can be toggled on or off as well, so you only see what you want to see.
It doesn’t end there. You can click a link in the application’s menu to get more clock faces. This takes you to the Toysoft website, where they have a few more skins you can download as well as complete instructions and some awesome templates for making your own. The only catch I saw was that in order to have the app automatically open when you plug in your BlackBerry, you have to also purchase MegaAlarm. Otherwise, you can just open up animClock manually either when you plug in or whenever you want a screensaver to display.
AnimClock is compatible with most BlackBerry devices, and is available for just $0.99 in the CrackBerry store. There is a free trial as well, so if you’re interested but unsure about it you can try before you buy.

The BlackBerry Partners Fund has announced that its co-managers have merged to create a globally competitive investment manager focused exclusively on mobile investment opportunities (i.e. JLA Ventures, RBC Venture Partners and BlackBerry Partners Fund will all be managed under a merged entity). The merger provides a platform for the growth and global expansion of the BlackBerry Partners Fund brand.
This should be a great opportunity for companies around the world seeking investment. There are a lot of hot companies in mobile right now, and not all of them are in North America. Latin America, Indonesia, India and China are all booming right now with tech companies and it will be interesting to see the innovation that springs up.

RIM is hosting a RIMoustache competition in the tradition of Movember to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer research. For those who aren’t aware, Movember is a campaign that asks men to shave their face November 1st, and grow a mustache to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The idea is to change your face to change the face of men’s health. Prostate cancer affects many men and in 2010, it’s estimated that 24,600 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,300 will die of it. This is a worthwhile cause.

About 6 months ago we posted about You Make the Call, a game for baseball fanatics that shows you an HD video of a baseball play and then asks you to make the proper judgement, as though you were the umpire. The plays are really difficult to judge and the game is a great concept, but it still needs a little work. The You Make the Call app features:
Currently, the app is around 6MB, which is a huge memory savings considering it was originally over 200MB. The problem is that the video files take up a lot of space for the game, so if you don’t have much memory on your device, be careful with installing this. Hopefully they figure out how to keep the video on the SD card, separated from the app itself. It’s also not clear what their device support is like so some users may have a better experience than others.
Download the app for your BlackBerry here.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is official and the biggest selling feature for this device is the better camera, additional Flash memory and of course, BlackBerry 6. Considering there doesn’t seem to be much new with this device and the differentiation with the 9700 isn’t all that great, initial price points do seem a little high. Features of the device include:
The Bold 9780 is going to be available from various carriers beginning in November, and we have learned already that T-Mobile will offer the device November 17 for $129.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

As some of you all out there know, the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK was rather slim on content. No apps were loaded, no web browser was built in and it really is just the basics of what could be if developers showed it some love. Jerome, from BBerryGo sat down, looked at the SDK and decided the lack of web browser on the device was pretty lame.
So what does a BlackBerry developer do on the PlayBook when there is no browser? Make one of course. The above is the result of only two and half hours of work with the PlayBook SDK and while the PlayBook is sure to include a browser, this is a prime example of how fast stuff can be developed when given a strong set of developer tools to work with. Very nice Jerome. What do you all think? Some pics can be found after the break.
