Review: autoTRADER for BlackBerry

Posted by admin On December - 31 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS
autoTRADER

One of Canada’s leading marketplace for buying and selling vehicles, autoTRADER, was made more readily available as a Blackberry application a couple of months ago. Anywhere you are, you can whip out your BlackBerry and scour through listings to find the car of your dreams; like you need an excuse to pull out your BlackBerry anyway. If you find one that sports a Mr. Fusion, a flux capacitor and has the ability to fly, I strongly suggest you pick it up right away. Read on for more.

Fancy Widgets

Fancy Widgets is a cool little app that brings the widgets of other platforms to your BlackBerry device. It features an automatic wallpaper switcher, integration with BerryWeather and the BlackBerry Calendar, and many other nice visual tweaks. The BerryWeather integration (as pictured above) alone makes it a must have, in my opinion. Fancy Widgets really does add some nice customization to your device, and I have yet to see another app like it for BlackBerry.

You can pick up Fancy widgets on sale for $2.99 (40% off) at the CrackBerry App Store, until December 31st. It is compatible with device running OS 5 and up.

Body Glove Snap-On Case for BlackBerry Torch 9800

Posted by admin On December - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

In my pursuit of the best BlackBerry Torch case I came across the Body Glove Snap-On Case for BlackBerry Torch 9800. The case works the same as most of the other snap-on cases we have seen, but has a different feel to it as well as a cool “kickstand”. The case fits on snug and is easy to grip, and you can choose to use it either with or without the included kickstand/belt clip. This one gets a good rating due to the fact that it is multi purporse and can be used in a few different ways. I did struggle a bit with the stand at times (if you don’t get it to go the right way the device just falls over — as you can see in the video I struggled with it quite a bit at first) but once you get the hang of it you’ll be fine. If you don’t need the clip, just pop it off and you’re left with a flat back on the case. Overall a good buy if you’re a Torch user especially if you watch many videos and need a good home for your device. Available at the BBM Groups Online App Store for $24.95. Check out the video above and keep reading for more images.

Tear down videos are nothing new for smartphones – we’ve seen most of the newer BlackBerry device models get ripped apart to their bits, but have you wondered what actually is inside those bits? The folks at Kidela, a communications company with connections to rare earth miner Stans Energy Corp., produced the above video which gets into some of those details. Check out the video above! In the video they focus on rare earth elements (see wikipedia page) which are the metals actually used in specific components within a BlackBerry. It’s pretty science geeky, but also pretty cool to know that it’s Europium that makes the color red in the LCD screen (Terbium makes green and is responsible for the backlighting in the phone) or that Yttrium is used in the camera. So the next time your teacher yells at you for snapping photos of your friend on your BlackBerry in chemistry class, just let the teacher know you’re doing an experiment with rare earth elements. ;)

rim logo blue1 RIM Releases Official Statement Regarding BlackBerry PlayBooks Battery LifeJust the other day there were reports coming out that the BlackBerry PlayBook would be delayed due to poor battery life of only a “couple hours”. To clear the air, Research In Motion has released an official statement regarding this issue:

“Any testing or observation of battery life to date by anyone outside of RIM would have been performed using pre-beta units that were built without power management implemented. RIM is on track with its schedule to optimize the BlackBerry PlayBook’s battery life and looks forward to providing customers with a professional grade tablet that offers superior performance with comparable battery life.”

It will be interesting to see if RIM makes any big announcements at this year’s CES, the largest consumers electronic show. If RIM is still on point with the release of the PlayBook, that would peg it at releasing no later than March 2011.

TATA DOCOMO

Tata DOCOMO has announced a new plan for both its pre- and postpaid BlackBerry customers. The new plan, dubbed BlackBerry Unlimited, allows customers to experience their BlackBerry smartphones to the fullest without limitations, i.e. unlimited Internet browsing, unlimited e-mail, unlimited social networking and unlimited access to BlackBerry App World. And that is not all – with the new plan, Tata DOCOMO will also provide customers in select areas an additional quota of 300MB data allowance for free!

Should that not sound convincing yet, the BlackBerry Unlimited plan will cost you a mere Rs 399 (less than 9 USD) per month. Although Tata DOCOMO’s selection of BlackBerry smartphones leaves a lot to be desired, the new plan is a solid, but also an affordable deal. Or at least, I believe it to be an affordable one. Say, how much do you currently pay for the luxury of having a BlackBerry smartphone every month? Please leave a comment, I am eager to see the numbers!

FontCollection v1.6 by Almoko

Almoko has released a new app called FontCollection for your BlackBerry. Personally I was super excited when I saw this in the CrackBerry store, because I love fonts and the chance to add some cool new ones to my BlackBerry was intriguing. Usually you are stuck with the stock fonts on your device, or if you change themes, the font that the theme developer used. With FontCollection you can browse through more than 60 fonts, right on your BlackBerry! You install the fonts you want, and then access them through your Options menu. FontCollection is available for just $.99 in the CrackBerry store and is compatible with devices running OS 5.0 and BB6.

Important notes:

  • All fonts in the FontCollection are free for commercial usage.
  • English fonts only are supported at this moment.
  • BlackBerry OS 5.0+ supported.
  • Small footprint

TimmyMe TimmyMe

BlackBerry Bold 9780 owners who are fans of Tim Hortons (or Timmy Ho’s as I like to call it) will be happy to hear the the TimmyMe app is now available from App World for the 9780. Unfortunately, Torch owners are still waiting for support on this one (it seems in installing the TimmyMe .jad on the Torch that the app works fine in landscape, but things get cut-off in portrait mode). If you’re not familiar with TimmyMe, it takes advantage of your BB’s GPS to offer up these features:

  • Automatically detects your current location and provides nearby restaurant information and addresses
  • Can provide a map to your selected location
  • Contains the most current Restaurant information
  • Finds stores with a drive-thru
  • Provides a notepad to save your friends orders

Most Tim Hortons addicts know every location within 25 miles of home/work, but if you’re traveling it’s definitely a handy app to have if you can’t get through the morning without your Double Double. You can visit TimmyMe.com for more info, and grab the app from App World at the link below. And hopefully Torch support is will be available soon.

Free Newegg app for BlackBerry now available in BlackBerry App World

Like buying electronics? Of course you do, everyone does at some point. Newegg, has made the process of buying electronics from them on the go even easier for better or for worse. They’ve just released a mobile app to BlackBerry App World which allows you to browse and purchase items directly from their site on your BlackBerry smartphone. Some of the key features for the app:

  • Comprehensive product specifications.
  • 1.7+ millions customer reviews.
  • Detailed item image gallery.
  • Quick and simple shopping flow.
  • Simple and quick search function.
  • Good for deal hunting: Shell Shockers, Daily Deals and Free Shipping.
  • All purchases made on Newegg Mobile are routed through Newegg’s secure servers.

The sad news? Well, despite BlackBerry App World indicating that it is indeed available for all devices, it is not. Although I did not test all devices, I can confirm it’s not yet available for the BlackBerry Torch (unless it’s just blocking me in Canada). Which really, is fine with me at this point. The last thing i need in my life is an easier way to buy electronics. But if you’re looking to spend  some of that cash you got for the Holidays then by all means, check the app out. Some great deals are to be had on Newegg.

Leaked OS 5.0.0.1041 For The BlackBerry Tour 9630

BlackBerry Tour owners have kind of been left in the dark when it comes to OS leaks. But, today ends that drought. OS 5.0.0.1041 has just sprung up for all you Tour owners who are looking for a new OS. We don’t have to tell you this but we will anyways, it’s a leaked OS so be sure to back up your data before loading it up. Also, be sure to drop some comments here or in the CrackBerry forums about what, if anything is new within the OS itself so that others may know.

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Code Muncher for BlackBerry easily scans QR codes

Posted by admin On December - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS
Code Muncher

You know, as much as we love our smartphone keyboards, some of us really don’t like to type on them any more than we have to. That’s one reason why QR codes are becoming more and more popular; ease and speed of use, marginal room for error vs manual input, and versatility. We reviewed some of the available options a few months back, with Joseph comparing four different apps to see what worked and what didn’t. This week a new app has appeared in the CrackBerry store, from popular developer motek mobile, called Code Muncher.

Code Muncher scans and reads QR codes in real time by simply pointing the BlackBerry camera at a QR code and taking a picture of it. Upon recognition of a QR code, the application will instantaneously process and decode the image. Users can view web sites, send SMS messages, call phone numbers, and save contact information from QR codes.

Motek mobile has two versions of Code Muncher available: a free, ad supported version and a paid version for just $.99. There are some options built in to the app to customize it, such as different sound effects while scanning and different colors for the little muncher guy. Overall, the app does what it says, and you can’t beat free. The only catch is that so far Code Muncher is only available for the BlackBerry Bold 9780 and Torch 9800, BB6.

A History of Research In Motion – part 1

Posted by admin On December - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Mike Lazaridis and Jim Basillie

The future of Research In Motion hangs in the balance. It is the early summer of 1997, and Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie stand in a BellSouth conference room. They’ve spent the last few years trying to convince the world that mobile email is the future. They’re almost there. RIM has already produced one device, the Inter@ctive Pager 900; and is developing a second – sometimes called the Leapfrog.

But BellSouth – the one and only customer for RIM’s soon-to-be Leapfrog – isn’t happy. They’ve spent $300 million to buy and build the Mobitex wireless network. But without products to make use of that network, BellSouth finds itself with an unprofitable enterprise. If BellSouth goes through with plans to sell the network, RIM loses its Leapfrog network and the only customer for the device.

RIM Co-CEO’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have but one chance to change the minds of the high-level executives in that room. The executives “walked in there thinking they were going to pull the plug,” says Jim Hobbs, VP Operations, BellSouth Mobile Data. As Lazaridis begins the presentation that will decide the future of his fledgling company, he comes to a horrid realization. He and Balsillie had been so nervous about the meeting that they had left the models of the Leapfrog in their taxi. It was a make-it or break-it presentation, and the most important parts were lost.

blackberry playbook1 BlackBerry PlayBook could be delayed due to battery life issues?

We heard rumors that the BlackBerry PlayBook was getting delayed until March 2011. Reports are coming from Kaufman Bros. analyst, Shaw Wu, claiming that his sources say the delay has been caused due to poor battery life.  The BlackBerry PlayBook is currently said to have “just a few hours” worth of battery life. The competition, such as the iPad has 10 hours worth of battery life.

“[This is] likely why [RIM] pushed out its launch to the May 2011 quarter,” Wu said, referring to the March to May timeframe. “Keep in mind that QNX wasn’t originally designed for mobile environments but rather for devices like network equipment and automobiles where battery life isn’t as much [of] a constraint.”

Shaw Wu was also pessimistic on how well the PlayBook might do. Wu believes RIM is making “good progress” with QNX and the PlayBook, but feels there is “simply not enough apps or users” from App World to make it a success. Wu believes RIM will sell  only 700,000 PlayBooks in 2011.

If RIM can’t fix the battery life issue, will this impact your decision to purchase it? Would it matter if the PlayBook was heavier to support a larger battery?
